Ilyushin IL-2 Sturmovik

Airfix 1/72

This was a 'classic' Airfix kit and was a really horrible thing to build. Not only is it a rather bland model, but the fit is poor, the rivets are ugly and the model shape is all wrong. Airfix did not do their research of this aircraft very well. The two seater IL-2 had a much broader wing - the narrow wing in this kit was only used on the initial solo-crew versions. It was unable to support the gunner and his armour (and if I remember correctly, the extra fuel needed, too) and so the broader wing that is so characteristic of this iconic aircraft was developed. A real shame that Airfix got that wrong. The cockpit glazing does not fit well together and isn't as shown in the instructions and the decals were definitely nothing to write home about, either. Still, it doesn't look too bad, I suppose. This was why I decided to try out a spinning propeller effect for the first time on this particular model. It isn't too bad - but will be better next time! Avoid this kit.
